Crane and Lorenz are coauthors with the Ohio Department of Health on "The Ohio Gestational Diabetes Postpartum Care Learning Collaborative: Development of a Quality Improvement Initiative to Improve Systems of Care for Women." The objective is to improve clinical practice and increase postpartum visit Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) screening rates in women with a history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM).

Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) affects an estimated 3 to 9 percent of all pregnancies in Ohio per year, which means about 13,000 moms-to-be will be diagnosed with GDM in 2016. The Ohio GDM Postpartum Care Learning Collaborative works with providers and moms-to-be to improve prenatal education related to GDM and postpartum visit and screening rates for type 2 diabetes.

GDM is diagnosed during pregnancy and occurs when a mom-to-be has high blood sugar. Many women who are diagnosed with GDM when they are pregnant go on to get type 2 diabetes later in life.
