Preconception Health 101

The Preconception Health Project is aimed at reducing maternal mortality by improving preconception health. GRC is leading development of training materials for providers of preconception health clinical services to promote awareness of preconception health in the community throughout 2024. Through efforts to design 'Preconception Health 101', a change package aimed at training Reproductive Health and Wellness Program Staff, the project seeks to address causes of maternal mortality and ultimately improve the health outcomes for individuals of reproductive age.

The Preconception Health 101 digital provider change package includes a description and summary of preconception health, relevant screening tools, referral resources, and ways to incorporate preconception health guidance into medical history and health care visits. Four one-hour trainings will be presented to community members and delivered by Nurse Health Educators, with corresponding patient education handouts to share with community members. The content areas include a reproductive health overview, tobacco cessation efforts, mental health, and managing chronic diseases commonly affecting pregnancy. A pre/post evaluation will be developed for community members to assess knowledge before and after the training sessions.

The pre/post training evaluation findings will be summarized in a report that includes recommendations and project deliverables as appendices.
