Our team is in the process of moving the EMBED Competence training from a Canvas learning management system to this project webpage. We expect to have all the modules in the training added to this webpage by September 2026.

To achieve this aim, we present education and information on how to embed the Core Competencies on Disability for Health Care Education in curricula for interdisciplinary health professional faculty. In this training, faculty will learn why disability competence training is needed to improve patient outcomes, what the six core disability competencies are, and models and recommendations to infuse disability competence training in curricula. The course will provide faculty with the necessary knowledge and curricular resources they can use to improve disability education in their healthcare professional training program.

The intended outcome for this training is to equip faculty with the knowledge and resources to train future healthcare professionals on best practices in providing accessible preventive healthcare to people with disabilities to ultimately reduce health disparities experienced by people with disabilities.

All content in this training is open-source content that you may download and share directly with students in your healthcare professional training program. The training contains several brief lecture style videos, recorded panel discussions with people with disabilities, associated PowerPoint slides, and suggested readings that can each be downloaded and adapted to meet the needs in your program.   • After completing this course, the learner will be able to:

    1. Identify the importance of integrating disability related competencies into medical education.
    2. Describe disability through patient centered models to understand lived experiences.
    3. Identify effective communication strategies for interacting with people with disabilities.
    4. Describe the legal versus ethical responsibilities involved in caring for patients with disabilities.
    5. Identify how clinical practices versus decision-making frameworks affect the disability community.
    6. Identify how interprofessional teamwork can enhance disability competent care across clinical encounters versus educational curricula for patients with disabilities.
